History of Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage has evolved from traditional techniques practised as part of family rituals for thousands of years. It has links with the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, a Sanskrit word meaning “science of life and longevity”. Its approach is to achieve a balance between body, mind and spirit in turn promoting physical, emotional and spiritual well being.

The Hindi word for head massage is champi and our word for shampoo is derived from this. Massage, regarded as an essential skill in Indian families, is believed to preserve the body’s life force or energy (also known as prana) and the Hindi word for massage, jarahar, has the literal meaning ‘remover of old age’.

The tradition of Indian head massage having been passed on through the generations, has evolved into the therapy now practised in the western world today and is a mixture of traditional and modern massage techniques. Apart from the head, this tends to include additional areas of tension such as the neck, shoulders and upper arms. Oils such as sesame, coconut, olive and almond favoured in traditional Indian head massage tend not to be used.

Increasing in popularity over recent years, Indian head massage has become a primary form of stress management to the demands of modern day living.
